Wednesday April 21,1999 the Lancaster Township Fire Department
responded to a structure fire at the Lancaster County Racquetball
and Health Club 1319 Millersville Pike. The fire erupted shortly
before 6:15 am in the sauna room and spread upward into administrative
offices sending heavy smoke throughout the building.
As the first engines arrived they were receiving reports of health club members still in the building. Smoke had reached the roof of the building trapping Dorothy Gray 62, who was in a tanning booth on the second floor. As she screamed for help from the top of stairs of the entrance to the building Assistant Chief Keith Rankin entered the smoke filled building and brought to safety. She was then taken by the West End Ambulance to Lancaster General Hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation and released.
Ladder Towers from the Willow Street Fire Company, Eden Fire Company and Lancaster City bureau of Fire were placed at the corners of the building to cut holes in the roof to ventilate the heat the smoke.
An estimated 100 fireman from 11 companies brought the blaze under control in an hour causing extensive damage which has been estimated at $400,000. State Police fire marshal Adam Kosheba determined the fire started in the area of a heater in the sauna room and was of an accidental nature.
