Garage Fire

The Lancaster Township Fire Department was dispatched on Wednesday August 1, 2001 at 1:45am to a reported woods fire in the 500 block of Kensington Terrace in the Hershey Heritage Apartments. Lancaster County Dispatch center started to receive multiple calls stating that a building was involved. The assignment was immediately redispatched and upgraded to a structure fire. Deputy Chief Ron Comfort was the first arriving officer on the scene and found a fully involved garage consumed with fire. A second alarm was requested bringing Engine 6-5-4 from the Millersville Fire Company, Truck 6-7 from the Roherstown Fire Company and Truck 5-12 from the Willow Street Fire Company. Engine 6-6-1 layed approximately 500 feet of 5" supply line from a nearby hydrant to the scene of the fire. Engine 6-6-2 boosted the pressure from the hydrant to Engine 6-6-1. Firefighters initially protected a maintenance garage next to the burning building containing a tractor and maintenance equipment. Incoming crews from Engine 6-6-2 and Rescue 6-6 attacked the burning structure. The fire was knocked down in a matter of moments and was under control after approximately 30 minutes. Firefighters from 5-12, 6-5 and 6-7 overhauled the charred smoking rubble of the collapsed structure. The blaze will be investigated by a State Police Fire Marshal. Engine 6-8-1 from West Lancaster Fire Company was relocated to the Lancaster Township Fire Department South Station covering any additional emergencies in Lancaster Township. The approximately 1000 square foot garage was being used to store paint for a painting contractor as well as lawn maintenance equipment.
