Lancaster Township Fire Department was dispatched at 6 a.m. on Sunday March 3, 2002 to assist Station 2-4 (Eden Fire Company) on a vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer with confirmed entrapment. A black Honda Accord collided with a tractor trailer in the 2100 block of New Holland Pike trapping the driver of the Honda within the wreckage of the car.
Rescue 2-4 removed the roof from the vehicle to gain access to the patient and proceeded to work on extricating the patient from underneath the dashboard. Lancaster Township rescue personnel assisted Rescue 2-4 with the extrication by deploying their Amkus hydraulic spreaders and rams to push the dashboard away from the patient. With both rescue teams working in concert, the dashboard was lifted from atop the patient. After extrication from the vehicle, the patient was placed on an awaiting stretcher and was transported to the Lancaster General Hospital Trauma Unit for treatment.
After the impact with the car, the tractor trailer traveled 500 feet westbound coming to a stop into the side of a dirt hill of a drive way with the trailer blocking the eastbound lane. The tractor sustained severe damage during the collision. The drivers side front tire and rim was ripped from the axle of the rig along with a rear wheel that was torn from the rim. Diesel fuel leaked from the saddle tank. Absorbent pads were used to soak up the fuel.
Fire police closed the roadway to protect the emergency personnel from traffic. Lancaster Township Fire Police closed the roadway on the west side of the scene as fire police from the Upper Leacock Fire Company closed the road on the east side.
