Crash Cuts Power to 430
The Lancaster Township Fire Department was dispatched on Friday November 17, 2001 at 2:45 am to a vehicle accident with entrapment in the 1000 block of Columbia Avenue.
A sport utility vehicle driven by Greg Lombardo of 1332 Meadow Creek Lane lost control of the truck as he was traveling west on Columbia Avenue. Lombardo veered off the north side of the road near First assembly of God Church, 1025 Columbia Avenue, sheered off a telephone pole and overturned on its side trapping Lombardo underneath the vehicle. Lancaster Township rescue personnel assisted by Rescue 6-5 from the Millersville Fire Company used air bags to raise the truck to extricate Lombardo. It took rescue personnel 15 minutes to free Lombardo from underneath the truck. Lombardo was rushed to Lancaster General Trauma Unit and was listed in serious condition.
Because wires were sparking in the trees that were attached to broken utility pole, PPL workers cut power to about 430 customers in the area. Traffic was rerouted by Lancaster Township Fire Police around the scene for four hours until PPL replaced the shattered utility pole. Lancaster City Police Officer Klete Griffin investigated the incident.
