April 4, 2005 - Lancaster Township Fire Department held its bi-weekly Monday night training at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center in the vehicle rescue area. Captain Scott Slaymaker served as the instructor for the evening.
A two car accident was simulated on the vehicle rescue pad of the training center. One car was perched atop a second car creating a difficult stabilization and extraction challenge.
Rescue personnel used wood cribbing, Hi-Lift jacks, air bags and a chain come along to stabilize the vehicles. Amkus hydraulic cutters, spreaders and rams were used along with an air chisel and portable cutting saws to gain access to the passenger compartment of the cars.
Junior firefighters were taught by Deputy Chief Ron Comfort Jr., the proper method of stabilizing a vehicle using wood cribbing.
