MONDAY MAY 2, 2005 — Lancaster Township Fire Department was dispatched at 4:08am for a vehicle accident with reported entrapment. Deputy Chief Ron Comfort Jr. was pre-alerted to the call from a firefighter on the scene confirming one person trapped.
Comfort arrived to find one person still in the vehicle and two patients lying on the road way.
Rescue 6-6 was the first unit on the scene. The rescue crew stabilized the van and set up for extrication. Stabilization was difficult due to the entire rear axle being ripped off with the rear end of the van sitting in a drainage ditch.
Once stabilized, the drivers door was completely removed to give plenty of room to extricate the combative patient. From time of arrival to extrication complete was 11 minutes.
The minivan was heading west in the 1300 block of Columbia Avenue when it left the roadway and struck a fence, a construction warning sign and at least five or more trees, snapping off three of them at their bases before coming to rest against fence on the North side of the road.
Two females and two males were in the van, driven by Tanya Aguasvivas, Lancaster City Police said.
Two of the passengers were thrown out of the van onto the ground, A third person was trapped inside the van and freed by the rescue crew.
Two LEMSA and one Susquehanna Valley ambulance responded to the accident which closed Columbia Avenue from Abbeyville Road to Jackson Drive. Lancaster Township Fire Police assisted by Roherstown and Southern Manhiem Township Fire Police provided traffic control.
As a PostScript, LTFD was dispatched again to the same location about 2 hrs later. This time for a stand by while the tow truck loaded the van. As LTFD was completing that call, LTFD was dispatched to another MVA, another car into a tree at Columbia Avenue and Wilson Drive, one block away.
