Stove Fire @ Hershey Heritage Apartments
May 20th, 2006, 4:21 PM

SATURDAY MAY 20, 2006 —LTFD assisted by Millersville Fire Company, responded to a kitchen fire at 532 Misty Drive, apartment #8 in the Hershey Heritage Village Apartments at 4:21 pm.

An occupant of the appartment ran to the residence of Gerry Gaenzle, the complex security guard who lives was close by.  She told him, her kitchen was on fire.

Gaenzle Called 911 and ran to the burning apartment to assess the situation.

Gaenzle found the stove top in the kitchen on fire, which was extending to the microwave oven, cabinets and ceiling above the stove.

Gaenzle used 2 fire extinguishers to knock the fire down before the fire department arrived.

Firefighters used pressurized water can fire extinguishers to extinguish the remaining flames.

After removing the burnt stove, cabinets and microwave from the apartment, firefighters removed the ceiling tiles, charred wood and wallboard behind the appliances to check for any fire extension.

Smoke filled the residence and extended into the nearby apartments.

Millersville firefighters checked the 3rd floor cockloft which was charged with a light smoke haze but found no fire extension.

Firefighters used ventilation fans to expel the smoke from the building.

The cause of the fire was determined as unattended cooking.

Damages are estimated at $10,000 structural and $5000 contents.

Firefighters remained on the scene for 1 hour.

Lancaster Township Fire Chief Glenn Usdin was in command of the incident.
