Smoke Detector Saves Family
October 23rd, 2004, 2:35 PM

Family Evacuates Home, Dog Rescued

On October 23, 2004 at about 5:30 am the occupant of 13 Hoover Road, Lancaster Township, awoke for a camping trip and found his house full of smoke. As he woke up, the home's smoke detectors began to alarm, awakening the rest of his family. The family quickly evacuated the home and called 911.

Assistant Chief Steve Roy arrived to find smoke showing from the front door.

Once on the scene, Engine 66-1 crew pulled a hose line to make entry to the basement. A working fire was found in the basement, in the area of the furnace. It was quickly extinguished.

Engine 66-2 arrived to lay a supply line from the hydrant to supply Engine 66-1 with water while the crew from Engine 66-2 pulled a back up hose line.

Truck 66 arrived shortly after and began providing secondary egress points and a primary search. While searching, the family's pit-bull was found and rescued, unscathed, from a first floor bedroom.

Assisting Lancaster Township Fire Department on the scene were Millersville Fire Department (65), New Danville Fire Department (55), Willow Street Fire Company (512) and Lancaster EMS (612). Deputy Chief Ron Comfort Jr. had command; Assistant Chief Steve Roy had operations. The cause of the fire is believed to be a furnace malfunction. The incident was completed in about 2 hours.

The events of this fire, prior to fire department arrival are testament to the importance of having and maintaining your smoke detectors. They can, and will save your life. If you ever need assistance with your smoke detectors or batteries, please never hesitate to call the LTFD South Station any Monday evening at (717) 394-5353.
