Eight people were displaced Sunday morning when a two-alarm blaze damaged their Neffsville home, officials said.
Investigators said an unattended cigarette was to blame for the fire, which started in the attic of a 2?-story home at 2436 Lititz Pike in Manheim Township.
Homeowner Christopher Burnett called 911 shortly after 8 a.m. and left the home with his wife, four children and two other relatives, who lived in the attic.
Damage was estimated at $150,000, but no one was hurt, investigators said.
"Considering the attic was occupied, it could have been a lot worse," Neffsville fire Chief Mike Elliott said.
Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley was helping the eight displaced occupants, believed to be staying with friends or family Sunday night.
Elliott said the home is salvageable, "with a new roof and a replacement attic. They are not going to have to tear it down."
The chief said firefighters found physical evidence that showed smoking was to blame for the fire. Interviews with the occupants also confirmed that, he said.
Elliott said it was unclear how the cigarette was left unattended.
"That would just be speculating at this point," he said Sunday evening.
When fire crews arrived at the house, heavy smoke was billowing from the top floor, Elliott said.
As crews tried to enter the residence, they were met by heavy flames in the front and rear of the attic.
Most of the flames were controlled in about an hour, the chief said.
The attic was completely gutted, officials said, and the second floor also sustained fire damage. The rest of the home sustained smoke and water damage, investigators said.
Firefighters from Neffsville, Lititz, East Petersburg, Eden, Southern Manheim, Lancaster Township and Lafayette departments helped battle the blaze.
Part of Lititz Pike was shut down until firefighters cleared the scene about 12:30 p.m., Elliott said.
