Power Surge Sparks House Fire On Columbia Ave
August 23rd, 2006, 5:12 PM

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 23, 2006 – LTFD responded to a house fire at 1130 Columbia Ave. at 5:12 p.m. LCWC advised Chief 66 enroute to the scene the resident experienced a power surge and his basement now has smoke in it.

The caller also stated there is a smell of something electrical burning and the house is being evacuated.

Arriving units found a large tree limb had snapped and fell across electrical lines that were supplying the house.

PPL was on the scene prior to the arrival of the fire department and denergized the fallen electrical lines.

The tree limb pulled the wires to the ground and crushed a fence below. The wires stretched and snapped from nearby utility poles on the property.

The exterior electrical service where it was attached to house was torn from the building. The conduit pipe housing the wires was bent over at a 90 degree angle and pulled bricks out of the wall where it was attached.

The pipe was attached to the outer brick wall and not secured to the building itself. The glass electrical meter base was also shattered.

Firefighters searched the building for hazards.

Units were on the scene for 30 minutes.
