Manor Care AFA / Investigation

Lancaster Township Fire Department returning from an automatic fire alarm at 1420 Columbia Avenue (Maple Grove Community Center), received a second emergency call from Lancaster County-Wide Communications via radio at 2:08 p.m.

LCWC informed Chief 6-6, (Glenn Usdin) of an automatic fire alarm at 100 Abbeyville Road (Manor Care Nursing Home).

A second call from a nurse supervisor in the building reported an oder of smoke coming from a ceiling vent in the Arcadia Wing.

Nursing home staff began to evacuate the alzheimer’s patients according to nursing home protocol.

Chief 6-6 hearing the additional information, requested Roherstown Engine 6-7-1 and West Lancaster Rescue 6-8 to assist with the investigation.

Truck 6-6 crew assisted by Engine 6-6-2 crew inspected the attic and air conditioner spaces as well as the maintenance and boiler rooms and could not find the origin of the smoke oder.

Roherstown and West Lancaster crews assisted Lancaster Township firefighters with interior and roof operations upon arrival. Nothing was found on the roof.

Finding no smoke oder interior or exterior, all companies returned to service.
