LANCASTER COUNTY, PA - An overnight fire in a former Lancaster Township day-care center caused an estimated $300,000 in damage, destroying one wing of the building.

The vacant building at 1325 Elm Ave. had housed Magic Years Child Care & Learning Center but was being renovated into an adult care facility, a fire official said.

The fire at the building was "totally involved" when firefighters arrived around 12:30 a.m., said Glenn Usdin, deputy chief of the Lancaster Township fire department, who was in charge at the scene.

Usdin said firefighters had the blaze under control within 30 minutes and stayed until 4:30 a.m. There were no injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.

The one-story building with gray siding and maroon shutters is divided into two wings that are connected by an enclosed walkway. Usdin said the blaze started in northwest part of the west wing and firefighters successfully fought to keep it from spreading to the building's east wing or to a next-door dentist's office.

The building's west wing, however, was another story. Although the walls were still standing this morning, it was gutted and most of its roof was collapsed.

"It is history," Usdin said.

The nearly 7,000-square-foot building is between Hamilton Park and WGAL-TV. It was being renovated for Albright Care Services, of Lewisburg, which had hoped to open there Oct. 1, Usdin said.

Usdin said some 60 firefighters assisted at the scene, including members of Millersville, Rohrerstown, East Petersburg, and Lancaster City fire departments.
