On Tuesday, August 10, 2004 at 10:50 a.m. Willow Street Fire Company was dispatched for a building fire at Frey’s Evergreen Plantation and Garden Center. Lancaster County Fire Dispatch initially reported smoke in the ceiling above the model train room.
Willow Street Fire Chief Dave Reese was the first to arrive with heavy smoke coming from the building. He immediately requested a second alarm assignment.
Twenty-five fire companies including 17 tankers and over 100 firefighters fought the blaze. Units on the scene were Engine Co’s from: 512,41,47,51,511,52,53,54,55,58,59 and Chester Co 21. Rescue Co’s from: 512,66,513,57 and 65. Tankers from 41,410,51,510,511,513,53,55,56,57,58,59,62,65, and York Co.57. Hazmat 29 and EMS units from 512 and 513.
Initially employees tried to fight the fire with fire extinguishers but they were forced to flee as the fire spread.
Damages were estimated at over $900,000. State Police Fire Marshal had not determined the cause as of late Tuesday.
Chief 512(D.Reese) had the command along with LT 512-3 (L.Sauders). Chief 512-2 (B.Shenk) had Operations, LT 66-1 (P.Castline) had the Side A/B division and Capt. 66-1 (J.Hatfield) had the side C/D division. PSP fire marshal is investigating the fire. No injuries were reported.
