TUESDAY MARCH 9, 2010 - Story By LT. Brett Fassnacht, Photos By LT.Greg Leaman.
Just before 7pm LCWC dispatched LTFD, Engine 6-5-4 (Millersville), Truck 5-12 (Willow Street), and Truck 6-7 (Rohrerstown) to 540 Kensington Road in Hershey Heritage Apartments for an apartment fire.
Engine 6-6-1 responded within 30 seconds of being dispatched staffed with 4 firefighters. Additional information given reported the tenant had a grease fire on his stove and that he had attacked it with a fire extinguisher.
As other units began responding, Chief Ron Comfort Jr. arrived to find a 2 story apartment building with normal conditions. Chief Comfort proceeded up the sidewalk to the apartment to investigate further and found the fire to be out with a moderate smoke condition inside.
Comfort returned to his vehicle, established command, and scaled the assignment back to only the units from LTFD. Upon the arrival of Engine 6-6-1, the crew proceeded into the apartment to scan the kitchen area with the Thermal Imaging Camera and begin ventilation.
A quick scan of the affected area showed no signs of extension and after a few minutes of positive pressure ventilation, the apartment was clear of smoke. The apartment was turned back over to the tenant and maintenance personnel. Station 6-6 returned to quarters within 20 minutes.
