THURSDAY JUNE 28, 2007 -- A Manor Twp. family escaped a fire in their mobile home at the  Pheasant Ridge Manufactured Housing community along Stone Mill Road at 106 Dawnfield Court.

The mother, father and their son got out safely.

LTFD assisted West Lancaster Fire Company at the 12:20 a.m mobile home fire with Engine 66-2, truck 66 and Rescue 6-6.

Initial reports from PD on the scene was a fully involved mobile home. Heavy fire and smoke was visible as the first engines were arriving.

Upon arrival of the first arriving engines, fire was visible from the A/D corner (rear corner of the building) and roof area.

West Lancaster Engine 68-1 officer called for a defensive attack. LTFD Engine 66-2 arrived at the same time and was instructed to pull a line and protect the exposure buildings.

A deck gun knocked down the bulk of the fire in the bedroom on the A/D corner. Fire had taken hold of the bathroom, a second bedroom and a living area.

LTFD LT. Paul Castline performed a quick 360 of the structure and realized the fire was only involving the rooms in the A/D corner. Castline advised command and agreed to change the tactics to an offensive attack.

As firefighters started to make the push in the front door they had to back out due to water pressure problems and tactics were changed back to defensive.

After the water pressure problem was resolved, tactics were once again changed back to offensive.

Crews advanced a handline back in the front door to find the fire advancing into the living room and almost to the front door. Crews made an aggressive attack and pushed the fire back.

Ventilation and hoseline work made quick work of the fire.

West Lancaster Fire Chief John Birkenbine said the blaze was accidentally started by a malfunctioning box fan. The mobile was destroyed by the fire, with damage totaling $62,000.

Birkenbine said five people lived in the home, but only three of them were home when the fire started and everyone made it out safely. They are receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

The home was equipped with smoke detectors, and there was no damage other nearby mobile homes, Birkenbine said.

West Lancaster Fire Company responded to the fire and was assisted by the Lancaster Twp. Fire Department, Southern Manheim Township, Columbia and Millersville fire companies.
