December 20th, 2004, 10:54 PM

Manor Care Nursing Home Provides Shelter For Children

Firefighters braved the 17 degree cold temperature.

December 20, 2004. -- The Magic Years Day Care Center was evacuated just before 4 p.m. when workers noticed smoke coming out of the heating vents. The smoke forced 40 children outside into the cold temperatures.

Due to the cold wheather, Fire Chief Glenn Usdin, enroute to the incident, requested additional ambulances, West Lancaster Rescue 6-8 and Roherstown Engine 6-7-1 to assist Lancaster Township units.

The children were first loaded onto a school busses and ambulances to keep warm.

The Manor Care Nursing Home across the street from the center offered to take the children in to stay warm until their parents arrived.

"The children were actually evacuating from the building. The last child I saw come out was probably three or four months old in a crib, and we were concerned with the cold weather conditions, and needed to get the kids into a warm area," said Glenn Usdin, with the Lancaster Township Fire Department.

Units remained on the scene for 45 minutes.
