Boat 6-6 Assists With Car Crash In Conestoga River

SATURDAY DECEMBER 22, 2007 - LTFD Boat 6-6 was requested by Lafayette Fire Company to assist on a vehicle accident in east Lancaster Township.
A minivan driven by Ruth Maria Ruiz of Lancaster ended up nose first in the Conestoga River Saturday after Ruiz lost control of the van, ran off the right side of South Conestoga Drive, overcompensated and slid sideways across the road before hitting a tree and sliding into the river. City police Officer George Quickel said speed was a factor in the crash that happened around 4:15 p.m.
Ruiz and a passenger, Maria Espinal, were treated at Lancaster General Hospital for minor injuries. Lafayette Fire Co. Assistant Chief Howard Hershey, said firefighters erected a boom to contain paint and car fluids from spreading into the river. The paint was in the van, he said.
Firefighters from Lancaster Township patrolled the water by boat to make sure fluids were not spreading into the river. Keith Rea, of Cabbage Hill Garage, pulled the van from the river.
