September 10th, 2005, 11:15 AM

MILLERSVILLE, PA – Millersville Fire Company responded to a dwelling fire at 437 Herr Avenue in Millersville Borough on Saturday September 10 at 11:04 a.m.

Lancaster County Wide Communications advised Millersville Fire Chief who was enroute to the scene they were receiving multiple calls from neighbors explaining there was smoking coming from the windows of the house at the intersection of Herr and Landis Avenue.

Tim Zimmerman, a Lancaster Township firefighter who lives three homes away from the burning building heard the dispatch and rushed to his neighbors house to check for occupants. Zimmerman knocked on the doors and windows and found the residents were not at home.

Heavy fire and smoke was billowing from the basement window wells. Smoke was also escaping from the  ground level windows of the single story dwelling explained Zimmerman.

Chief Eshleman arrived on the scene and requested a second alarm which brought Lancaster Township Rescue 6-6, Truck 6-6 and Engine 6-6-2 to the scene. A R.I.T. Millersville firefighters advanced two handlines into the basement through a breezeway door between the garage and the main house. A third line was stretched through a side entrance on side 2 of the house.

Firefighters broke out windows to allow the intense heat and smoke to vent from the building as the interior firefighters extinguished the blaze. The fire was under control within an hour of the dispatch.

A total of four cats and a dog died in the fire. Interior firefighters rescued one cat from the smokey house. The cat was brought out of the house from the side entrance door where it was handed to Millersville firefighter Dick Moriarty. Firefighter Moriarty attempted CPR on the cat until L.E.M.S.A. ambulance personnel arrived and began to administer oxygen to the cat. The cat did not regain consciousness.

The Lancaster, PA chapter of ORCA (Organization for Responsible Care of Animals) responded to the scene to attend to the deceased animals. ORCA provides support to police, fire, and other emergency personnel when they are dealing with situations that involve animals.

Engine 6-6-2 crew assisted with ventilation from the exterior and engine company operations. Truck 6-6 crew performed salvage and overhaul operations. Rescue 6-6 filled empty air cylinders used during the fire.

The occupants of the rental property, James Jones, his wife and their daughter were assisted by the American Red Cross finding temporary housing.
