MONDAY JUNE 25, 2007 - LTFD assisted Southern Manheim Twp. Fire Company at a 2 alarm apartment building fire that broke out at 2 a.m.
All 25 residents of 16 housing units, at 919, 921 and 923 N. Prince St., were evacuated without injuries, said Kathleen Smyser, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross of the Susquehanna Valley.
Dozens of firefighters from 11 fire companies responded to the blaze, between West Liberty Street and McGovern Avenue, across from the Neptune Diner.
State Police Fire Marshal John Clifford said his initial investigation showed the fire started in a first floor apartment. The cause of the blaze did not appear to be suspicious, he said.
John Tshudy, chief of the Southern Manheim Township Fire Company, said the fire apparently started in a chair in a back room of 923 N. Prince St. He did not know what had ignited the chair.
Also damaged was the site of USA Auto Group, 925 N. Prince St.
Wes White said firefighters broke down two doors and a window to gain access to the commercial garage.
In addition to Southern Manheim Township, firefighters from Eden, Neffsville, East Petersburg, Lancaster Township, Lancaster City, Rohrerstown, Ronks, Lafayette and Upper Leacock Township fire companies battled the smoke and flames.
